CHANGE OF OPERATING STATUS APPLICATION

Persons regulated under National Safety Code standards must have the appropriate Operating Status displayed on their Alberta Safety Fitness Certificate. Failure to have a Safety Fitness Certificate with the proper Operating Status may result in the carrier's vehicle being detained by enforcement personnel at roadside and/or prosecution.

The two types of Operating Status (OS) are:

1. "Provincial" Operating Status authorizes a carrier to operate solely within Alberta.
   Applies when a carrier operates solely in Alberta with one or more commercial truck, tractor or trailer or any combination of these vehicles that has a registered weight of 11,794 kilograms or more, or a vehicle(s) with a designed seating capacity of 11 persons or more, including the driver.
   
   
   • A carrier with a "Provincial" Operating Status may NOT leave the province.
   • Farmers are exempt from the requirement to have a Safety Fitness Certificate when using farm-plated vehicles transporting their own goods.
     
     
2. "Federal" Operating Status authorizes a carrier to operate anywhere in Canada (point to point within Canada or to/from the US border).
   Applies when a carrier operates/travels outside of Alberta with one or more commercial or farm truck, tractor or trailer or any combination of these vehicles that have a registered gross vehicle weight exceeding, or that weighs more than 4,500 kilograms, or a vehicle(s) with a designed seating capacity of 11 persons or more, including the driver.
   
   
   • No exemptions from the requirement to have a Safety Fitness Certificate or to comply to transportation safety legislation for farm-plated vehicles and their driver.

Operating Status Change Information

To submit a Change of Operating Status application to Alberta Transportation, ensure that the following information or documentation is available.

• MVID Number - Motor Vehicle Identification Number (as shown on your vehicle registration or Safety Fitness Certificate). More information is available in the online application.
• NSC Number (as shown on your Safety Fitness Certificate), e.g. ABXXX-XXXX.

NOTE:

The application MUST be completed by an individual named on the vehicle registration. When vehicle registration shows a corporate, society, or organization name, then the application MUST be completed by an owner, manager or director.
